Program Notes

Into the Jungle (2013) was composed for the Rock School of Dance Education in celebration of their 50th Anniversary Season. Based around the theme of a carnival celebration at the zoo, the three movement suite is intended as a piece for young children and families. In the first movement "I. Parade" a mother and young child arrive at the zoo. There is music, dancing, and live animals, as well as acrobats and carnival performers wearing costumes and facepaint. Overwhelmed by the sights and sounds, the child doesn't seem to know which animals are in costume and which are real. In the second movement "II. Maternal Nurture" the mother and child see other animal mothers caring for their young in simple, loving, gestures. In "III. Jungle Dance" the child has wandered off alone. Frightened, it seems the zoo is turning into a real jungle, and now the animals are coming out of their cages! But, summoning courage, the child leads the animals together in a wild dance!
